Mount Buffalo, Alpine National Park offers a bird’s-eye view of the Australian Alps from giant granite boulders. Picnic tables near a little stone hut let you enjoy lunch with spectacular sights, and for kids with stamina, a short but steep climb leads to the summit with breathtaking views of the Bogong area. Best visited in the warmer months when the track is dry and roads are open, it’s a stunning adventure spot beyond the ski season.

Lake Catani, Mount Buffalo is picnic perfection on the plateau, with calm waters ideal for paddling, a small jetty for littlies to splash in, and plenty of picnic tables and an undercover BBQ shelter. Surrounded by snow gum woodlands, families can enjoy bushwalks branching off the lake, or for older kids, the 4km track to The Gorge. Easily accessed from Porepunkah or Bright, it’s perfect for a day trip or an overnight stay at the campground.
