Parks, playgrounds and things to do with kids in Wonthaggi, Victoria

📍 Wonthaggi · east
The State Coal Mine in Wonthaggi is a fascinating family destination where history literally comes to life. Once the source of 17 million tonnes of coal for Victoria’s railways in the 1900s, the site is now a safe, enclosed space for kids to explore, including the old K192 engine. Entry is free, with plenty of museums, displays, and outbuildings full of artefacts to spark curiosity. For an extra fee, visitors can take an underground tour to see where the coal was mined, though these tours may sometimes be temporarily closed. It’s a brilliant stop for a family road trip or day out in the region.
