Liverpool Road Retarding Basin is a beautiful spot to soak up fresh air and sunshine, with the Dandenong Ranges providing a stunning backdrop as you wander the mostly flat loop that takes around 30 minutes at a relaxed pace (a little longer if you’ve got curious little explorers in tow). Designed to store stormwater during heavy rainfall and release it safely to prevent downstream flooding, the basin doubles as a lovely morning walk that’s best enjoyed early before the sun heats up. Mamma’s little ones happily explored the long grass, discovered a teepee and stopped to inspect every tree and rock, while the single hill offers a decent leg workout if you’re pushing a pram. It’s perfect for bikes, scooters and small legs, and a great place to pack binoculars, a magnifying glass or bug catcher to spot wildlife like platypus, toadlets and owls. Dogs are welcome too and will love a splash in the basin, just be mindful there are off-leash areas if your kids are unsure around dogs.
