The old Geelong Gaol, operating from 1853 to 1991, housed some of Victoria’s most notorious criminals, including Chopper Read and bushranger Frank McCallum. Now a museum, the three-storey building preserves original features such as cells, gallows, the hospital, surgery, gymnasium, and kitchen, offering a vivid insight into harsh prison life. Visitors can join daytime history tours or after-dark ghost tours to explore the jail’s fascinating—and reportedly haunted—spaces.
